Rice is a grain that has been cultivated for several thousand years and originates from East Asia.
Valuable nutrients and vitamins
Rice is valued for its nutritional properties and ease of preparation. Thanks to its high carbohydrate content, it satisfies hunger and provides energy. At the same time, it contains minimal amounts of fat, cholesterol, and sodium.
Rice is also a source of B vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, phosphorus, and selenium. It is naturally gluten-free, making it suitable for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Brown, wild, and black rice contain a higher portion of dietary fiber, which increases satiety for longer. More processed white rice is low in fiber but therefore easily digestible.
Rice varieties
Arborio rice is a variety originating from Italy and is a common ingredient in risotto. Organic arborio rice is characterized by round grains and a slightly sweet flavor. It contains a high amount of starch, making it sticky.
Basmati rice comes from the foothills of the Himalayas in India. It has long, narrow grains and is loose when cooked. Organic basmati rice thrives in spices like curry and turmeric. It's a great addition to meats, fish, salads, stuffings, and exotic dishes.
White rice is the most popular. The polishing process removes the grain's outer shell, leaving only the endosperm. However, it's the outer layers of the rice grain that contain most of its nutrients. White rice is enjoyed by most people and cooks quickly. It can be stored for up to 10 years in an airtight container.
Brown rice , also known as organic rice, retains its nutrients. Only one layer is removed, leaving the valuable bran. The husk contains minerals such as phosphorus, which strengthens bones and teeth, potassium, which regulates heart function, magnesium, zinc, and iron. Organic organic rice contains a portion of B and E vitamins. It requires longer cooking and doesn't have as long a shelf life as white rice.
Jasmine rice originates from Thailand, which is why it's sometimes called Thai rice. It's a long-grain variety with a delicate jasmine aroma. After cooking, it remains rather loose, making it suitable not only for traditional dishes but also for salads and sweet dishes, such as those with strawberries.
Wild rice originates from North America. It's not actually rice, but rather a water oat. It has a slightly grainy and nutty flavor, lending dishes a unique look and flavor. Wild rice pairs well with fish, seafood, poultry, and game.
Black rice is considered the most nutrient-rich variety. In addition to high-quality carbohydrates, it's a rich source of fiber and the antioxidant vitamin E. The anthocyanins in black rice slow down the aging process and prevent the development of cancer and diabetes. Organic black rice complements oriental dishes, pairing well with game, poultry, fish, and seafood.
Red rice originates from India and is distinguished by its red husk. The grains are not hulled, so they retain their nutritional properties and require longer cooking. It is an excellent source of iron, manganese, zinc, and B vitamins. Organic red rice owes its color to anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants—they have anti-cancer properties, slow down the aging process, and have a beneficial effect on the circulatory system. Red rice has a slightly sweet and nutty flavor.
How to cook rice?
Rinse the rice grains under running water, then add them to salted boiling water and simmer over low heat until the water is absorbed. The amount of water is twice the volume of rice (rice to water ratio is 1:2). Then, turn off the heat and let the rice sit in the pot for a few minutes to absorb any remaining moisture.
You can also pour a portion of rice into a larger amount of water and, after the time indicated on the label, strain it in a strainer.
