Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most thoroughly researched dietary supplements – and one of the few for which scientific evidence is truly strong. EPA and DHA, the two key acids in this group, play an essential role in the functioning of the heart, brain, and vision, and their adequate dietary levels are difficult to ensure without regular consumption of fatty sea fish.
What are omega-3 acids and where to get them from
Omega-3s are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The three most important are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid, present, among others, in flaxseed and rapeseed oil), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). While ALA is relatively easy to obtain from a plant-based diet, EPA and DHA – active forms actually utilized by the body – come mainly from fatty sea fish and seafood. The conversion of ALA to EPA/DHA in the human body is inefficient and does not replace direct consumption of these acids.
Properties and application of omega-3s
DHA is a structural component of brain cell membranes and the retina of the eye. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart – this health claim is approved by EFSA with a daily intake of 250 mg.
Omega-3 acids are also an important element of supplementation for fish-eliminating diets: vegetarian, vegan, and all dietary models in which sea fish are excluded or consumed infrequently.
