Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable cultivated for thousands of years in the Peruvian Andes, at altitudes above 3500 m above sea level. The powdered maca root belongs to the group of adaptogens and is valued for its rich nutritional profile – it contains B vitamins, vitamin C, minerals (iron, zinc, calcium, potassium), and the macamides and glucosinolates characteristic of this plant. Certified organic maca comes from organic farms, free from synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
What is maca root?
Maca is a root vegetable from the Brassicaceae family, botanically close to rapeseed and radish. It grows on Andean plateaus in extreme conditions: large daily temperature swings, strong UV radiation, and poor soil. After harvesting, the root is dried and ground into powder. In this form, it has been consumed for centuries by the indigenous people of the Andes as a staple in their diet, and today it has gained popularity in the superfoods market.
Properties and uses of organic maca
Maca root powder is a source of iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, vitamin C, and B vitamins. It contains dietary fiber, as well as glucosinolates and macamides – compounds characteristic only of this species, studied, among other things, for their effects on hormonal balance. Traditionally, maca was used as a means of supporting vitality and stress resistance.
As a food powder, maca works well:
- in shakes and smoothies,
- as an addition to oatmeal, yogurt, or muesli,
- in baked goods and desserts.
It has a characteristic, slightly nutty-sweet taste with an earthy note. It is usually used in portions of 1.5–3 g daily – exact recommendations may vary depending on the product.
