Adaptogens are a group of plants and fungi that have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to support the body during times of chronic stress and fatigue. Contemporary research confirms some of these properties – though it is worth approaching this category without excessive expectations and understanding what adaptogens actually are, and what they are not.
What are adaptogens?
The term "adaptogen" describes plant-based substances that help the body adapt to various types of stressors – physical, psychological, and environmental – not through direct stimulating or calming action, but by modulating stress responses. The classic definition requires such a substance to be non-specific (acting on multiple systems), safe for long-term use, and helping to restore physiological balance regardless of the direction of the imbalance.
Among the most well-researched adaptogens are ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), true ginseng (Panax ginseng), Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), and maca (Lepidium meyenii).
Properties and uses of adaptogens
Ashwagandha is one of the most thoroughly researched adaptogens. It contains active withanolides, which are attributed with properties that modulate the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal). In clinical studies, it has been used to alleviate the subjective feeling of stress and fatigue, improve sleep quality, and support recovery after physical exertion.
True ginseng is traditionally used as a tonic to support vitality and concentration. It contains ginsenosides – compounds with complex effects on the nervous and immune systems. Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) acts similarly, though it belongs to a different plant family and contains different active substances (eleutheroside).
Maca is an Andean plant from the cruciferous family, traditionally used as a remedy to boost energy and libido. Studies have observed an effect on energy levels and subjective feelings of vitality, although the mechanism of action is not fully understood.
Adaptogens are not medicines and do not replace treatment for anxiety disorders or depression. They work subtly and gradually – effects are usually observed after several weeks of regular use.
Adaptogens – what you will find in our store
In this category, products from several suppliers are available in various forms.
Ashwagandha is available both as organic powder (Bio Planet, Batom) – a convenient form for adding to smoothies and drinks – and in capsules: ForMeds BICAPS Ashwagandha and Medica Herbs Ashwagandha. Capsules provide dosing precision, while powder is more flexible and usually more cost-effective with regular use.
Organic maca powder is available from Bio Planet and Batom – here, too, the main selection criteria are quantity and preferred consumption form.
You will find ginseng in the form of liquid ampoules from Meridian: true ginseng extract and two variants with royal jelly – true ginseng and Siberian ginseng. This form ensures rapid absorption, characteristic of this brand.
Completing the offer is Yogi Tea Ashwagandha Balance BIO – a milder introduction to adaptogens for those who do not want to immediately reach for capsules or powder.
It is worth noting that ashwagandha also appears in the stress, sleep, and nervous system category, where it is combined with other supplements supporting relaxation and sleep quality.
