Dabur 's history dates back to 1884, when Dr. SK Burman began producing Ayurvedic remedies for ailments plaguing the residents of Calcutta, India. He delivered his products across Bengal by bicycle. Patients began calling his medicines " Dabur "—a name derived from the words daktar (doctor) and Burman (the doctor's surname). He later began mass-producing his Ayurvedic remedies. The company, founded by Dr. Burman, has remained in the Burman family, and is now in the hands of the fifth generation.
Currently, Dabur sells its products worldwide and employs over 7,000 people. It is the fourth-largest consumer goods company in India and the largest Ayurvedic company in the world. Dabur products are widely popular in the Middle East, SAARC countries, Africa, the USA, Europe, and Russia.
For over 138 years, Dabur has been producing natural products based on Ayurvedic formulas . Its portfolio includes a variety of cosmetics, food, dietary supplements, and cleaning products. It uses herbal and plant-based ingredients that are natural and chemical-free.
"Ayurveda" itself is generally understood as the "science of life." It is an ancient system of life and the oldest surviving medical system in the world, originating in India 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda emphasizes life in general, with a slightly more specific focus on human life. It is a way of striving for a happy life through a profound understanding of the functioning of the human body and the surrounding reality.
