Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a vitamin-like substance naturally synthesized by the body, present in all cells, especially those with high energy demand - the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles. It plays a role in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, participating in ATP synthesis. It also has antioxidant properties - in its reduced form, ubiquinol, it helps protect cellular membrane lipids from oxidation.
The synthesis of coenzyme Q10 in the body naturally decreases with age. It can also be reduced in people taking statins, which inhibit the mevalonate pathway – common to the biosynthesis of both cholesterol and CoQ10.
